Dubai Floods 2022

Dubai Downpours Cause Airport Disruptions

Heavy Rains Swamp UAE, Leading to Flight Delays

Flash Floods Inundate Streets, Submerge Vehicles

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – torrential downpours battered Dubai and surrounding areas on Saturday, inundating streets, submerging vehicles, and temporarily halting operations at Dubai International Airport, a major hub for long-haul carrier Emirates.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 142mm (5.59 inches) of rain had drenched Dubai, surpassing the average annual rainfall of 947mm (37.3 inches) recorded at Dubai International Airport.

The relentless rainfall led to widespread flooding, with streets transformed into raging rivers and homes and malls submerged. The relentless downpour also caused significant disruption at Dubai International Airport, with several flights delayed or canceled due to the hazardous weather conditions.

Authorities in Dubai have issued warnings to residents, urging them to avoid driving in flooded areas and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next few days, with meteorologists forecasting additional rainfall in the region.

The intense rainfall is the latest in a series of extreme weather events to hit the Middle East in recent years. Climate change is believed to be exacerbating the frequency and severity of these storms, posing significant challenges for cities and infrastructure in the region.
